Social partners to discuss new national agreement

The Government, trade unions and employers will meet in Dublin today to discuss a new social partnership agreement to replace the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness.

Speaking yesterday, Tanaiste Mary Harney said people should be realistic about their expectations because of the downturn in the economy.

However, SIPTU vice-president Jack O'Connor said his union will not accept any attempt by employers to secure a pay freeze or to keep pay rises below the level of inflation.

"They've been indicating very clearly they expect workers to accept a cut in living standards and that simply won't happen," he said.

He continued: "We won't agree to that and if they insist on adhering to that line, we will not have an agreement."
