The National Advisory Committee on Drugs has recommended a pilot study of the drug buprenorphine, a possible alternative to methadone in the treatment of heroin addiction.

The NACD said the drug is not a miracle cure, but is safer and could prove more effective for some addicts if used in connection with counselling.
