State Pathologist John Harbison has presented a graphic autopsy report to the inquest into the deaths of two elderly women in Grangegorman in Dublin five years ago.

Sylvia Shiels and Mary Callinan were both murdered in a frenzied attack at a community care home near St Brendan's Psychiatric Hospital in March 1997.

Dr Harbison told the inquest this afternoon that both women were repeatedly stabbed in the face, throat and chest.

Their bodies were also bruised, lacerated and mutilated, he said.

The cause of death was recorded as shock and haemorrhaging.
