GAA to meet Government about funding

The GAA is to hold discussions with the Taoiseach this evening as speculation mounts over continued Government funding for the association in light of the ailing public finances.

It is understood that the remainder of a promised €75m package for the sports organisation is on the agenda.

Last night, a Government spokesperson would neither confirm nor deny that the use of Croke Park for the 2008 Euro Championships in return for the funds promised is on this evening's agenda.

It is understood that close on one third of this money has already been paid over and a difficulty now exists over paying the remainder of the fee.

Among those reported to be attending this evening's meeting are Minister for Sport, John O'Donoghue and Finance Minister, Charlie McCreevy.
