A poll in today's Irish Times shows 61% public opinion against the re-introduction of college fees. Education Minister, Noel Dempsey's plans to charge €4000 a year to those who can afford it, had already met strong resistance from parents and students.

It is claimed the idea is unworkable, as it would lead to marking down earnings to qualify for a grant.

Spokesperson for the National Youth Council of Ireland, Colm O'Mongain says, "There are certain people who are declaring their own income who can write off certain living expenses to tax, where as PAYE worker can't do that.

"PAYE workers would be hit unfairly with this as a group who allegedly can afford it, despite having a number of children that want to attend further education, where as those who can change around the books yet can well afford it, can escape this, and may even qualify for the grant."
