A 22-year-old Cork man has been remanded in custody after being charged with the murder of a homeless man at a special sitting of Midleton District Court.

Mark Allingham, from Father Murphy Place, is accused of murdering Gerard Hackett at a derelict house in the town sometime during the last week.

The dead man, who was in his fifties, is believed to be from Cork city, but was living rough.

His badly-beaten body was found by gardai yesterday, along with an implement believed to be the murder weapon.
