Police and army attacked with petrol bombs

Police and soldiers have come under attack with petrol bombs and other missiles while attending a bomb alert in Derry.

A police spokeswoman said up to 60 youths launched a “sustained attack” in the City’s Nationalist Bogside area last night.

“Petrol bombs, fireworks, bricks and bottles were thrown in the area of Rossville Street and the surrounding area of Fahan Street,” she said.

“Damage has been caused to police vehicles but at this stage there are no reports of any injuries.”

Fahan Street was sealed off at Butcher’s Gate when a suspect package was discovered earlier in the evening. The package was later declared a hoax.

A police spokesman later said the area had returned to normal.
