Publicans demand increased legal powers

Publicans are demanding increased legal powers to protect customers and staff from trouble-makers.

The Vintners' Federation is making the call as a Westport publican, who had refused to serve drink to travellers, had his licence renewed in Mayo District Court, despite an objection.

The federation says publicans must be able to protect people on their premises from all elements of society who may cause trouble or problems.

The VFI says a publican must retain an unquestionable right to refuse service.
