Minister launches disability project

The Minister for State at the Department of Health and Children, Mr Ivor Calley launched a pilot project using assistive technology today to help older people with disabilities to live independently at home.

Mr Eamonn Lawlor from Raheny had a disabling stroke a few years ago which left him wheelchair-bound, but he has now been enabled to return home after some high-tech adaptations to his house.

Through a specially-mounted video camera he can view callers at his front door and with the use of a simple hand-held remote control pad, he can control the opening and closing of the door.

The lights and curtains in his bedroom, kitchen, living room and hall can also be remotely controlled.
