Coughlan: resources will be targeted at those most in need

The Minister for Social Affairs, Mary Coughlan, has said pensions, poverty and social inclusion will still be high on the Government’s list of priorities in the forthcoming budget despite the worsening public finances.

The Minister met this morning with 27 social and voluntary organisations at the pre-annual budget forum.

Ms Coughlan said that while all their expectation could not be met, spending will be directed at those most in need.

"I've noticed, in browsing through the issues that have been raised, that most of them have one thing in common, which is to target resources to the right people. And that is what I will be doing in the context of my budget and the targeting will be very important to those who are less well off."
