Locals checked and questioned over Russborough raid

House to house checks and inquiries are now underway in the area around where five paintings were stolen at the weekend.

Gardai are examining the area and technical examinations are taking place near Russborough house in Wicklow.

Superintendent John Murphy insists that they are operating an intense investigation.

In addition, an incident room has been set up in Blessington Garda station.

A search team are also visiting local houses with questioners.

Meanwhile, there was speculation this evening that the raiders carried out the robbery to embarrass Gardai.

Senior officer are alleged to believe the gang are affiliated with former crime boss Martin Cahill.
