UVF parade allowed through Belfast city centre

The Parades Commission has upheld a ruling allowing a UVF march to pass through Belfast city centre later tonight.

Relatives of UVF victims had objected to the parade but it's being allowed to proceed.

The parade has been organised by a hitherto little known group calling itself "The Great Wars Historical and Cultural Society".

It’s intended to commemorate the ninetieth anniversary of the formation of the Ulster Volunteer Force to fight home rule.

The organisers say it will be a "pageant" including soldiers wearing period uniforms and vintage cars.

The UVF has since become an illegal paramilitary group, however, and relatives of some of its victims object to the parade.

Raymond McCord, a Protestant whose son was murdered by the UVF, said it was a disgrace that the group was being allowed to take over Belfast city centre.

In the current volatile climate within loyalism, with many fearing the outbreak of a new feud, tonight’s march could take place in a tense atmosphere.
