One person has been charged in a major new child porn investigation by police in Northern Ireland, it was revealed tonight.

Detectives have also questioned four other people who were among a list of 38 whose names were passed on as part of the probe.

Police have not disclosed any details of the person charged or the accusations they face, but arrangements will be made for a court appearance later.

The names were passed on to police by the US Postal Inspection Service, a senior officer confirmed.

It comes after more than 100 computers were seized in raids across the province during Operation Ore, led by the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Care Unit.

Detectives are examining material seized during the raids at 40 addresses in Northern Ireland.

“There is a massive amount of material to be examined,” said Inspector David McConville, a senior officer with the Care Unit.

He said it may be months before any other charges are brought: “We are waiting for the material to be examined and we will then take action.

“So far the search operation has been very successful.”

The operation was part of a UK-wide operation which led to the targeting of two officers involved in the Soham murder investigation of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman.

Meanwhile, Belfast High School headmaster Stephen Hilditch confirmed a member of staff was suspended as a result of a police investigation.

“We are complying fully with police advice,” he said.

“The decision was taken following consultation with the chairman of the board of governors.

“The governors and headmaster would hope that the matter is speedily resolved.”

He would not comment on the position the member of staff held at the school.
