Cardinal Connell calls on Government to shield poor

The Catholic Archbishop of Dublin is calling on the Government to shield the poor from budget cutbacks.

Cardinal Desmond Connell made the appeal during his annual address to the Dublin Diocesan Social Service Agency, Crosscare.

The agency provides 9,000 beds and 130,000 meals from its food centres to the homeless last year.
