Unions meet Harney in effort to save IFI jobs

Union representatives from the Irish Fertiliser Industries plant in Co Cork are in talks with the Tanaiste, Mary Harney, today in an effort to save the factory from closure.

The unions said €10m to €15m in state aid is needed to save the plant in Cobh and the jobs of the 200 people who work there.

Cobh Chamber of Commerce said that if the plant is allowed to close, the impact on the local economy will be devastating.

A Finnish company has already pulled out of plans to buy IFI and State intervention seems the only way of saving the plant.
