Commission members quit over human rights failures

The Government’s efforts to promote human rights in Northern Ireland suffered a setback today when two founder members of the province’s Human Rights Commission resigned, expressing concerns at the body’s failures.

The Government’s efforts to promote human rights in Northern Ireland suffered a setback today when two founder members of the province’s Human Rights Commission resigned, expressing concerns at the body’s failures.

Inez McCormack, regional secretary of the Unison union in the province, and Professor Christine Bell, professor of public international law at the University of Ulster, wrote to Northern Ireland Secretary John Reid tendering their resignations with immediate effect.
