Church of Ireland to elect new Archbishop of Dublin
The Church of Ireland will today elect a new Archbishop for Dublin following the resignation of Walton Empey in July.
The church’s episcopal college will meet at Christchurch Cathedral to choose Dr Empey’s successor and an announcement is expected in late afternoon.
Any bishop or priest over 30 years of age can be proposed for the position, but the new Archbishop will need two-thirds of the votes of both the clerical and the lay members of the college.
The Bishop of Meath and Kildare, Richard Clarke, and the Bishop of Cashel, John O’Neill, have been tipped as possible successors, with Archdeacon Gordon Linney also believed to be a strong contender.
