Tourists stoned by Derry mob

Two Australian tourists have been stoned by a mob during a ferocious attack in Derry.

The pair, a mother and daughter, took cover behind their vandalised hire car as they faced a barrage of rocks in the Nailor's Row area of the city.

Police were forced to evacuate them in an armoured jeep amid fears for their safety.

Neither was injured and they have now left the city.

But Sergeant Robin Young warned such attacks were destroying Derry's image.

The women's ordeal began when they called police to report the damage to their Fiat Punto.

As officers arrived they were forced to shelter behind the vehicle when stones began to rain down.

They were rushed from the scene, but a brick was thrown through the rear window of the car as another officer drove it away.

Last month police were pelted with paint bombs as they escorted a hearse to a morgue in Derry.

Officers looked on in disbelief as up to 10 youths launched an attack in front of the dead woman's physically disabled daughter. Stones were also thrown by the gang.

Nobody was hurt, but the ferocity of the attack on a hearse which had just pulled away from the woman's house stunned all sides in the city.
