Gardai name crash sisters

Gardai have named the two sisters from Northern Ireland who were killed when their car was involved in a head-on crash with another vehicle.

Tara Heaney, 30, and her 18-year-old sister Cheryl had just crossed the border heading towards Dublin when they collided with a northbound car last night.

The women, from Omagh in County Tyrone, died at the scene of the crash near Monasterboice in County Louth.

Two men, who were in the other car involved, were freed from the wreckage and taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. Both were said to be in a stable condition today.

A garda spokeswoman said: ‘‘There was a collision just outside Monasterboice shortly after 10.20pm last night.

‘‘Two women from Omagh were dead at the scene of the accident. Two males going north were injured in the head-on collision and are in a stable condition in hospital,’’ she added.

Officers have appealed for witnesses to the accident to contact them.
