Family of dead IRA man take legal action

The family of a Belfast man shot dead by the RUC ten years ago have begun legal action against Lord Chief Justice Robert Carswell, the highest-ranking judge in the North.

The Jordan family are suing Mr Carswell for allegedly breaching their son’s rights by refusing to hold an inquest into the shooting.

Pearse Jordan, a member of the IRA, was shot dead by undercover RUC officers on the Falls Road in west Belfast in 1992.

Police initially claimed that bomb-making equipment was found in his car, but this turned out to be untrue.

The Jordan family have already won a case against the British Government at the European Court of Human Rights because none of the RUC officers involved in the killing was asked to give evidence to an inquest.
