Fine Gael's John Bruton has criticised the Government for insisting that Irish soldiers will not engage in military operations overseas without a UN mandate.

The measure was introduced to ensure that Ireland only participates in actions approved by the UN, but Mr Bruton said it gives control of Irish troops to the five permanent members of the UN security council, who have the power to veto any mission.
