Gardai to get extra recruits

The Minister for Justice Michael McDowell has confirmed that the Gardai will be boosted by an extra 2,000 over the next few years. This will bring the total number of the force to 14,000.

Mr McDowell made the declaration last night and insisted that the extra officers in the force would be in place within the lifetime of the present government. However, despite the good news there are reports that there is not enough room in the national Garda college for the new trainees.
