In its annual report, the marriage-counselling service Accord found that long working hours and commuting times mean newly-weds have less time together than ever before.

Other issues that caused strain revolved around who does what in the house, both partners being overloaded with work, financial worries and some disagreement about the roles of in-laws in their lives.

Penny Wilson of Accord says the problem of "time poverty" means that the so-called honeymoon period is very short-lived.
