The Revenue Commissioner collected a record €28bn last year, despite a downturn in the economy.

The Revenue says a lot of the money was collected from investigations into tax evasion under the revenue voluntary disclosure scheme. Up to 3600 people volunteered over €227m from offshore accounts. Despite the record intake, the budget for net, tax and duty receipts were lower than expected.

The revenue commissioners also collected €17m from 47 cased in connection with the controversial Ansbacher report.

Four prison sentences were handed down last year for serious tax evasion and €60m worth of illegal drugs were also seized by the Commission.
