Fresh trouble hits east Belfast

Fresh trouble has reportedly broken out in east Belfast, with unionists accusing a senior republican in the Short Strand area of attacking a 16-year-old girl.

Democratic Unionist Party MLA Sammy Wilson claimed that the teenager was beaten and spat at by a mob which included a prominent republican.

However, republicans disputed Mr Wilson’s accusations and said a group of Catholics were attacked by loyalists as they made their way down the Newtownards Road.

Sinn Fein councillor Joe O’Donnell also claimed that mourners at the funeral of a 50-year-old woman were pelted with bricks thrown by loyalists and some were injured.
