Possible ecological disaster in Limerick

Crews and local authorities are attempting this evening to stop a major pollution disaster in County Limerick.

Earlier today a cargo ship carrying large amounts of oil overturned while loading dredging equipment in Foynes harbour.

A spokesman for the coastguard says that there are now experts trying to contain the situation.

However, there are concerns that leaking oil from the ship could seriously pollute the area and the wildlife around it.

Some heavy fuel oil has now washed up onto local beaches where a cleansing operation by local authorities is taking place.

In addition, oil is reported to be floating in the harbour itself.

Skimmers on the water this evening are trying to remove the thick liquid from the harbour.
