A new European Union drive to recycle electrical goods could end up hitting taxpayers hard, it was claimed today.

Ulster Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson gave a qualified welcome to the European Parliament’s endorsement of plans to recycle thousands of toasters, fridges, stereos and computers by 2005.
