Water Safety Association highlights rise in drownings
The number of accidental drownings in Ireland rose by 60% last year, according to figures released by the Irish Water Safety Association.
The IWSA said 86 people drowned in Ireland last year, with people in their mid-20s to early 40s most at risk. John Leech, chief executive of the association, said:
"I think complacency is a big factor here and drink, regrettably, is a very big factor in a lot of drownings as well. People have got to be an awful lot more responsible."
Next week is National Water Safety Awareness Week.
