Returning officers are predicting that the turnout in today's general election may still be higher than the 65.9% recorded in 1997.

Approaching 10pm - with just 30 minutes left to vote - Dublin turnout was averaging at 50%, 68% in Waterford, Clare at 40% and the two Tipperary constituencies at 50%.
