A post mortem was being carried out today on the body of a new-born boy found in Co Armagh.

The discovery of the dead infant was made by police yesterday at a house on the Battleford Road, a few miles from Armagh City.

The search was mounted after a woman was admitted to the Craigavon Area Hospital on Thursday in a critical condition.

Doctors discovered that the woman, from Eastern Europe, had given birth to a premature baby at about 30 weeks into her pregnancy.

Police were contacted and went to a bungalow beside a mushroom farm a few miles from Armagh.

The property was sealed off while forensic officers searched the scene. Police later confirmed a child’s body had been found.

The area was examined for a few hours by forensic experts.

A police spokeswoman said the police investigation was continuing and they would know more after the post mortem was completed.

The mother is now in a comfortable condition in hospital.
