CCTV to be used to quell north Belfast violence

The British government has agreed to install 45 new surveillance cameras at sectarian flashpoints in north Belfast in an effort to identify those responsible for almost nightly violence in the area.

The move was confirmed today by Jane Kennedy, Britain’s Security Minister in the North, after talks with acting police chief constable Colin Cramphorn.

Ms Kennedy had been under pressure to act amid fears that somebody could be killed if the violence is allowed to continue.

18 of the new cameras will be in place before the loyalist marching season this summer, most of them in the Limestone Road, Whitewell Road, Crumlin Road and North Queen Street areas.
