Saville rules out full legal representation for IRA men
The Bloody Sunday inquiry in Derry has refused to grant full legal representation to six former members of the Official IRA who have agreed to give evidence to the inquiry.
The men sought representation by solicitors and barristers to protect their position that they were not responsible for the deaths of the 13 civilians shot dead by British soldiers on January 30th, 1972.
Applying for legal representation, a lawyer for the men said they are concerned that they will be blamed for sparking the events which led to the deaths of the civil rights marchers.
However, Lord Saville, the chairman of the inquiry, said he and his two fellow members "are not persuaded that justice and fairness dictate that course, at least at present".
He said the circumstances may change as the inquiry progresses and he is always ready to review the decision.
