The two gardaí who were killed after a stolen car rammed their patrol car on the Stillorgan dual carriageway at 6.30am today have been named.
Garda Anthony Tighe, a 53-year-old married man with four children was behind the wheel of the patrol car as they attempted to divert traffic out of the path of the stolen Mazda sports car.
His colleague was Garda Michael Padden, a 27-year-old single man from Belmullet in Co Mayo.
Both men were stationed at Donnybrook garda station and had been on high alert following a series of robberies in the area earlier in the morning.
Garda Tighe joined the force in 1970 and was a native of Dublin city while Garda Padden joined in 1998.
Two men were arrested in relation to the incident and taken to St James Hospital but their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
