An independent report into the training of primary school teachers has recommended that college courses should be extended.

The report, which was commissioned by Education Minister Michael Woods, suggests that the Bachelor of Education programme be extended from three to four years, while Higher Diploma or post-graduate courses should be lengthened from 18 months to two years.
