Defence Forces staff welcome bullying report
Representatives of rank-and-file Defence Forces staff have welcomed the Doyle Report into harassment, discrimination, bullying, and sexual harassment in the force.
PDFORRA, the association for soldiers, sailors and airmen say it's important there is an immediate and effective response to the report, which should be accepted as a true reflection of the culture and attitudes in the forces.
RACO, which represents officers, says it welcomes the response from Defence Force management.
Gerry Rooney, acting General Secretary of PDFORRA, says the report's findings are not surprising.
He noted that half of the bullying allegations are made about activity during training.
"The training factor in regard to bullying must now be catered for through an independent and external investigation mechanism," he said.
Brian O'Keeffe, General Secretary of RACO, says the report was a comprehensive response from members of the Defence Forces, on crucially important issues.
"We fully accept this report and welcome it - and firmly hold the view that with the appropriate responses we can create a better and more effective Defence Force," he added.
