Irish officials have sent messages of condolences to the British royal family.

The President Mary McAleese and Taoiseach Bertie Ahern contacted the family on the death of the Queen mother. She died peacefully in her sleep yesterday at her Windsor residence, aged 101.

Other government leaders also sent their sympathies, including British Prime Minister Tony Blair and US President George W Bush.
