A unionist member of the North’s Police Board has refused to attend a passing out ceremony for 40 recruits next week.

Fred Cobain, a member of the Ulster Unionist Party, has objected to the fact that Garda Commissioner Pat Byrne is due to play a role in the ceremony.

He said Mr Byrne is welcome as a guest at the ceremony, but should not play an active role.

Meanwhile, the uniform for the new police service in the North will be unveiled - along with the new emblem for the Force - today.

The emblem was agreed by the 19 members of the Police Board and includes both the cross of St Patrick and the British crown.
