In the first, a man in his thirties died when his car struck a canal bridge and entered the water at Allenwood, Co Kildare at around 1.15am.

Elsewhere, a 21-year-old pedestrian was killed in Navan when he was struck by a car at Kilcarn on the Dublin road about two hours later.

In Dublin, two men are in a serious condition in St James Hospital following an attempted hit and run.

Gardai witnessed a red Transit van drive into a group of people and fail to stop on Peter's Row at Dublin 8 at 11.40pm.

They gave chase, and after the van crashed, a juvenile was arrested and charged with drunk driving.

A file has been sent to the DPP.
