The number of jobs lost in the Republic in the past week neared the 1,000 mark today when the American-owned EMC data storage equipment company announced 160 redundancies at its European headquarters in Co Cork.

The number of jobs lost in the Republic in the past week neared the 1,000 mark today when the American-owned EMC data storage equipment company announced 160 redundancies at its European headquarters in Co Cork.

EMC said the aim was for the posts at their base in the village of Ovens to be shed on a voluntary basis.
