FG leader pays tribute to Spike Milligan
Fine Gael leader Michael Noonan has paid tribute to comedian Spike Milligan who died at his Sussex home earlier today.
Mr Noonan said Spike Milligan would be remembered for his film work, poetry, childrens' books and his many appearances on the Late Late Show.
The Opposition leader said: "Speaking of the Irish in 1963, he said with a turn of phrase that only he could produce that ' some people die of thirst, but the Irish are born with one'.
"His love of this country was obvious whenever he visited these shores, and no offence was ever taken at this gentle mockery."
The Fine Gael leader also referred to Spike Milligan's 'serious side'.
"Having suffered from manic depression, his work in helping those suffering from the illness will be his epitaph," he added.
