Gardaí were today conducting forensic tests on a cache of terrorist weapons uncovered close to the Co Donegal border with Northern Ireland.

The arms were found following a planned search in a hedgerow near the village of Stranolar yesterday.

The haul - which gardaí believed could have been stored by a dissident paramilitary group - included two AK47 rifles, once the favourite weapon of the Provisional IRA, a pump-action shotgun, a machine gun, a rocket launcher and detonators.

No arrests have been made as a result of the find.
