Ahern denies abortion 'cowardice'

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has denied accusations of cowardice by the opposition after he refused to engage in a live television debate on the abortion referendum with Fine Gael leader Michael Noonan.

Mr Ahern said he is not running away from the debate and insisted that he has been discussing the issue of abortion for four years.
