The Environmental Protection Agency says that it has discovered traces of a highly toxic pollutant in the sea off the coast of the Co Waterford resort of Tramore.

The Environmental Protection Agency says that it has discovered traces of a highly toxic pollutant in the sea off the coast of the Co Waterford resort of Tramore.

The group is reported to have found traces of creosote in the samples of effluent taken from a premises located at Belvue Harbour in the town.

Creosote is can be a highly dangerous substance containing the chemical phenol, which can be fatal if ingested and can also cause breathing difficulties, comas and paralysis.

The water is believed to have been dumped into a manhole that flows into the Suir estuary.
