Taxi-drivers' claims to be assessed by panel

The Government is appointing an independent panel to investigate claims by taxi drivers that they’ve experienced extreme financial hardship since the industry was de-regulated in November 2000.

The three-member panel will hear submissions for a period of two months, and it will be a matter for the taxi-license holders to substantiate their claims.

The panel will then report to Minister of State, Bobby Molloy on the nature and extent of the personal financial hardship experienced.

Minister Molloy points out that the courts have clarified there can be no legal duty on the State to compensate taxi-drivers for opening up the market.

The Minister is also launching a consultation process aimed at improving the quality of taxi services, especially in the area of wheelchair access.
