Grenade made safe in Co Clare

A hand grenade dating back to the War of Independence found in the rafters of a barn at Spancil Hill near Ennis, Co Clare has been made safe.

It was found by well-known local traditional singer and farmer, Robbie McMahon.

Mr McMahon notified the local garda sergeant, who in turn notified the Explosives Ordinance Disposal Unit, based at Cork Barracks.

The Unit detonated the device at 12.10pm at a secluded spot at the rear of the farm.

Mr McMahon placed the grenade in the barn himself more than 20 years ago after he accidentally discovered it in a nearby field.

The discovery of grenades dating back to the Civil War and War of Independence is not a rare occurrence in Co Clare, with several finds reported in the last few years.
