Ireland has been given the go ahead to donate to charity tonnes of beef taken off the market during the foot-and-mouth crisis.

The meat mountain was built up as a result of a special purchase scheme to reduce beef stocks when European consumption was sharply reduced due to foot-and-mouth disease.
