Blood shortage halts non-emergency operations

Non-emergency operations were postponed at a number of hospitals in Ireland for the second time in 12 months tonight because of a shortage of blood.

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service contacted hospitals nationwide to tell them stocks were ‘‘critically low’’ and that supplies could not be guaranteed.
