Discriminating publicans facing charges under equality law

Publicans who operate a ban on children or a ‘regulars only’ policy could face prosecution under equality legislation.

Following three cases taken under the Equal Status Act recently, the Office of the Director of Equality Investigations said pubs, hotels or restaurants who operate quota systems and place a limit on the number of travellers they admit could also face charges.

The government body said these cases are important because bars and nightclubs are venues for social interaction and denial of access can deepen divisions in society.

Publicans have reacted with anger to this news and are planning the raise the matter with Justice Minister John O’Donoghue.
