Almost 80% of road deaths among front-seat passengers could be avoided if those travelling in the back of the car wear seat belts, according to a study in the Lancet Medical Journal.

The research shows that the risk to front-seat passengers in a head-on collision multiplies five-fold if rear-seat passengers are not wearing seat belts.
