Bank staff strike on euro’s first working day

France’s five main banking unions mounted a 24 hour strike today, threatening to disrupt the switch to the euro in the first working day for the new currency.

Customer service at bank counters was expected to be unreliable across the country as staff demanded higher pay, more hiring and better security.
